Hey all, and welcome back to the portfolio of yours truly, Brandon Greene-Hooks. Last time, I offhandedly mentioned my first game release and an event. At the time, I didn’t have enough concrete information to share with you all, so today, I’ll be clarifying. First, a couple of updates.
After a lot of behind-the-scenes tweaking for the Graphic Design section, I have a few subsections for it planned out: Wallpapers, Logos, Flyers, and Designs. “Designs” can be likened to a sort of “scrapbook”, or miscellaneous subsection, but neither of those words are very efficient for this context. There is also a “Special” subsection that is currently in the works, for the sake of a series of similarly styled graphics. As previously stated, Graphic Design has been a passion of mine for over six years, and as such, it should be rather large in size; however, this is not the case. So, in between other projects and life, I’ll be working toward filling this section with more recent works. This process should be completed by October 20th, if all goes well.
The other update I want to touch on is the 2D Animation section. There’s a bit of wait time on this section (November 1st), but it should be well worth it in the end. I’m currently gathering all the resources I need to not only start up this series, but maintain it in an organized fashion. Since much of it is still in the works, I can only give out so much information about; but I will say this: it is drawn in an Anime style, and currently titled “Inverse”.
Now, on to the event.
I am currently putting the finishing touches on my first, somewhat large, game release, and I’d like to send it off in a big way; but I’m getting ahead of myself. If you direct your attention to the Game Development section, you’ll see a single series there; clicking it will lead you to a logo, and a timer. The logo is for the game I’m releasing, Super Mario Bros. In First Person, and the timer will reach zero on the day it will be available for free download on the very same page upon refresh. The game was inspired by a rather famous video created by Brandon J. Laatsch and Freddie Wong, where you play as Mario in Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), from his point of view. And after six months of development, it’s nearing completion; but, it’s a bit greater than that. On October 23rd, the day before that game’s official release, I’ll be participating in an event hosted by the Phoenix Chapter of the International Game Development Association, (IGDA), where I will be passing out physical copies of the game to those that attend the meeting, under one condition:
Answer a Mario Question!
For half an hour prior to the IGDA meeting, and half an hour after the meeting, I will be going around asking attendees if they’d like to win a free game. Upon accepting, the contestant is asked three questions based on the Super Mario Bros. game for the NES. If they answer any of the three correctly, they win a copy of the game. However, an incorrect answer does not leave you going home empty handed; instead, you a given a small flyer, which has a link to the free download page for the game. Honestly, it’s a win-win situation, but the disc is pretty nice to have.
Below are the details for the event. Just look for the Afro if you’d like a copy.

That’s it for now, everyone. Be sure to make room in your schedule to go to this month’s IGDA meeting; if not for a chance to win a free game, then to connect with independent game developers and other amazing people.
